Frequently asked questions
What changed in Ontario auto insurance on July 1, 2026?
Medical, rehabilitation and attendant-care accident benefits remain mandatory, while many other statutory accident benefits became optional. Coverage for newly optional benefits is limited to the named insured, spouse, dependants and listed drivers.
Did existing policies automatically lose all of those benefits?
No. FSRA says existing policies generally renew with the same selected benefits and limits unless changes are agreed to in writing, although who is covered by newly optional benefits changed July 1, 2026.
Is DCPD mandatory?
DCPD is included in the standard Ontario policy, but since January 2024 an insured may elect in writing not to recover under DCPD.
What is the minimum liability coverage in Ontario?
Ontario law requires at least $200,000 in third-party liability coverage.
Does no-fault insurance mean nobody is at fault?
No. Ontario insurers still apply Fault Determination Rules and assign fault percentages.
